We speak with Juan Gonzales, founder of El Tecolote, celebrating its 50th anniversary. El Tecolote is California’s longest running bilingual newspaper, serving Bay Area Latinos since 1970. Juan talks about his passion for journalism, El Tecolote’s origins in La Raza Journalism at SF State, looking for an independent outlet for the stories that came out of the class. He remembers early days publishing out of people’s kitchens, laying out the paper using rubber cement before computers were part of the process. How existing coverage of the Mission was often negative, and people welcomed the opportunity to tell their own stories when El Tecolote did a five-part feature on the neighborhood.
