About the event
The Q-Sides was conceived and created by Vero Majano, Brown Angel, and Kari Orvik.
Originally presented in the Summer 2015, The Q-Sides challenged the long-held heteronormative exclusivity within the lowrider culture to unveil a queer presence. The Q-sides was part of a project series presented by Galería de la Raza that included Por Vida by Manuel Paul, (a digital mural installation on the Bryant Street public art facing site) and the film Homeboy by Dino Dinco.
The polarizing reception these projects received transcended across local politics and social constructs, vis-à-vis social media and presented an opportunity to address the violent erasure of queerness within the Latiné community while propelling Latiné aesthetic possibilities. Today, the work is presented within a targeted national social-political context in which Queer and Trans existence is under attack.
