From Nepal to 24th Street: A Journey of Food, Family, and Bravery

Santosh Gurung was born in Nepal, he migrated to the United States in 2013 to join his family, who had settled in San Francisco in 2006. After a brief move to New York in 2015 to explore new opportunities, he quickly realized that San Francisco was where my heart belonged—and he returned to build a life rooted in family, culture, and community.
His family always dreamed of opening a restaurant. Despite many challenges, they turned that dream into reality, launching their first restaurant in 2016 and a second one in 2018. Both focused on a unique fusion of Indian and Nepali cuisine, highlighting the flavors and traditions of their heritage.
In 2025, he partnered with the Thapa Family—who bring over 30 years of restaurant experience from Nepal—and Bishnu P. Bastola, a former tailor who transitioned into the culinary world. They were brought together by a mutual friend, Santosh Gurung, whose vision and encouragement sparked the idea of opening a restaurant as a team. That dream became reality with the launch of their third restaurant on 24th Street in San Francisco’s Calle 24 Latino Cultural District.
Their restaurant, named BIR—meaning brave in Nepali—is a tribute to the courage it takes to start anew in a different country and to pursue a shared dream. Together, they offer traditional and authentic Indian and Nepali dishes, served with heart in a true family business.
